A Study of Nursing Students¢¥ Recognition and Attitude about Nursing as an Occupation

Abstract
The purpose of this study lies in finding out the attitude of nursing students who are in sophomore class to senior class of local colleges in Chungnam, Chungbuk province and Daejon.
The questionnaire includes 14 items derived from 4 fields ; the expectation before or after entering nursing department, the recognition and attitude about nursing while in college, adaptation for college life, the job ability and natural disposition, and the professional viewpoint about nursing as a job.
The results of the study are as follows :
Before entering nursing department nursing students¢¥ recognition and attitude were relatively favorable but when they faced the problem of choosing a major field of study, a great portion of them had wanted to study other fields(67%) except nursing. But now a great part of nursing students show that they are satisfied with studying nursing in spite of a little inner conflict and that they have negative opinion on changing their future career(60 %).
56 % of nursing students answered that they were satisfied with in college life and that they had experienced the most serious skepticism about becoming a nurse when they are in clinical training or when they were in doubt about their ability and aptitude.
In carrying out the duties to cope with, nursing students regarded them as overloaded. So they think that they should acquire a lot of professional knowledge and skills to meet the sufficient care of patients. And they also think it desirable to perform their duties creatively and actively.
The image of ideal nurse which they cherish in their mind is that of nurse who has hearty sympathy for and sacrificed her lie for the patients, which, they say, formed with the increased knowledge and accumulated skills through clinical training.
Among the students who entered nursing department to be a nurse as a career those who think that they have the aptitude suitable for a nurse showed more positive and active opinion and attitude. The problem is that more care and consideration should be given to those who have poorer aptitude and more negative opinion for nursing, let alone the preparation of continuous education program for desirable students.
